Frequently Asked Questions About Boarding and Daycare at Troy Animal Clinic

Your Boarding and Daycare Questions, Answered

Leaving a pet behind is never easy. We get a lot of the same questions from pet owners before their first stay with us, and we're always happy to talk through any concerns. Here are answers to the ones that come up most often.

All boarding and daycare guests must be spayed or neutered and current on the following: negative fecal test (annually), flea and tick prevention, DHLPP vaccination, Bordetella vaccination, and Rabies vaccination.

Yes. Troy Animal Clinic offers doggy daycare Monday through Friday. Dogs spend the day in our supervised facility with access to indoor space and our outdoor play area. Call us at (334) 566-3356 for availability.

Boarding is for pets staying overnight or for multiple days. Daycare is a daytime-only service for dogs whose owners are at work or away during the day. Dogs are dropped off in the morning and picked up before we close. The two services are priced separately.

As soon as you know your travel dates. Our boarding facility fills up quickly, particularly around major holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, spring break, Memorial Day, Labor Day and summer vacations. For holiday periods, we recommend booking at least three to four weeks out.

Our boarding and daycare drop-off and pick-up align with our clinic hours: Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. We also offer after hours pick up at specific times on weekends and holidays. Those are:
· Saturdays at 8:00 am
· Sundays at 4:00 pm
· Monday Holidays at 4:00 pm

Daycare is available Monday through Friday only.

Weekend after-hours pick-up is available. Call us at (334) 566-3356 for details and to make arrangements.

Yes, and we actually encourage it for pets with sensitive stomachs. Switching foods during an already stressful situation can cause digestive upset, so bringing your pet’s regular food is a good idea. Please portion it out by meal and label the bag with your pet’s name and feeding instructions.

Absolutely. A familiar blanket, a worn t-shirt, or a favorite toy can go a long way toward helping your pet feel settled. We provide bedding, but you’re welcome to bring your own. Please label all items with your pet’s name.

Yes. Our staff is comfortable administering oral medications and, in most cases, injectable medications as well. Please bring all medications in their original labeled containers and include written instructions for dosing. Let us know at reservation time so we can note it in your pet’s file.

Yes. Our renovated outdoor area gives dogs space to move around, and they receive regular supervised exercise each day. Our outdoor space includes a covered section with ceiling fans to help keep dogs cool during warmer months.

Yes. Our feline and canine guests are housed in separate areas. This keeps stress levels lower for both species and lets cats rest in a calm environment without the sounds and activity of the dog area.

This is one of the big advantages of boarding at a veterinary clinic. Our doctors are on-site during clinic hours and can evaluate your pet if something changes during their stay. We will always contact you before administering any non-emergency treatment. In the case of an emergency outside of clinic hours, we will reach you using the emergency contact information you provide at check-in.

We can offer boarding for exotic patients under specific circumstances. Please call us for more information.

Yes. Spay or neuter is required for both boarding and daycare at Troy Animal Clinic.

Do you offer packages that combine boarding and daycare?
Yes. We offer Sleepover packages that bundle nights of boarding with days of daycare and grooming services. Options include Basic, Standard, and Deluxe packages. Call us at (334) 566-3356 for current rates and details.

Call us directly at (334) 566-3356 during regular clinic hours to reserve a boarding spot. You can also schedule your visit online via PetDesk and select “Boarding” in the reason for appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pet Surgery

Common Surgery Questions From Pet Owners

Preparing a pet for surgery is stressful for most owners. Here are answers to the questions we hear most often. If something isn't covered here, please call us directly.

Yes. In most cases, we ask that your pet not eat after midnight the night before surgery. Water is generally fine until the morning of the procedure. Fasting reduces the risk of complications with anesthesia. We will confirm the specific instructions when you schedule the procedure.

Anesthesia carries some risk for every patient, but the risk is significantly reduced when patients are properly screened and closely monitored. We conduct a pre-anesthetic evaluation before every procedure, and we recommend pre-surgical bloodwork for older pets or those with known health concerns. During surgery, a team member monitors your pet continuously using equipment that tracks heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, CO2, and temperature.

We recommend pre-surgical bloodwork for senior pets and for any animal with a history of illness or organ concerns. For young, healthy patients undergoing routine procedures, it may not be required, but it is always available if you prefer the extra reassurance. We will discuss what is appropriate for your pet during the pre-surgical consultation.

Most patients are dropped off in the morning and are ready for pickup in the afternoon or early evening. The exact timeline depends on the procedure, how your pet recovers from anesthesia, and how they are doing overall. We will give you a more specific window when your appointment is confirmed.

Troy Animal Clinic has two full-time veterinarians on staff, which is uncommon for a clinic in this area. Both doctors are experienced in surgical procedures, and a trained team member is with your pet throughout the entire procedure, from induction to recovery. We treat every surgical patient with the same attention we’d give our own animals.

When you arrive for pickup, we will go over your pet’s discharge instructions in detail. Most pets are groggy after anesthesia for several hours, and some may be unsteady or have a reduced appetite for the first day. We will explain what is normal, what to watch for, and when to call us.

Keep the incision site clean and dry. Check it daily for signs of redness, swelling, discharge, or separation. Prevent your pet from licking or chewing at the site. An e-collar is often sent home for this reason. Restrict activity as instructed, typically no running, jumping, or rough play for 10 to 14 days. Full written instructions are provided at discharge.

We send most surgical patients home with pain medication. Follow the dosing instructions as provided, and do not give human pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, as these are toxic to pets. If your pet’s pain seems unmanaged or you’re concerned about how they’re doing, call us right away.

Call us if you notice any of the following: the incision opens or begins draining, your pet is not eating or drinking by the second day post-surgery, your pet shows signs of pain that their medication is not controlling, they are lethargic beyond the first 24 hours, or you notice anything that simply doesn’t seem right. It is always better to check in than to wait.

We handle the majority of soft tissue and minor orthopedic procedures in-house. More advanced orthopedic surgeries such as TPLO for cruciate repairs, or complex internal surgeries, may require a board-certified specialist. If your pet’s condition falls outside what we perform, we will tell you directly and assist with the referral process.
